On 8 September, Legislative Chamber and Senate of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan held a joint session.
During the session, MPs of the Legislative Chamber and Senators considered the issue “On the temporary assignment of the duties and powers of the President of the Republic of Uzbekistan”.
According to article 96 of the Constitution of Uzbekistan, chairperson of Senate of Oliy Majlis becomes an acting president if current present could not carry out his duties. The presidential elections should be held within three months.
At the meeting, chairperson Nigmatilla Yuldoshev said that Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyayev is appropriate candidate for the post of acting President due to his work experience in senior positions at the Government of Uzbekistan and respect of population.
Legislative Chamber and Senate of Oliy Majlis of Uzbekistan adopted a joint resolution on temporary assignment of the duties and powers of the President of Uzbekistan to Prime Minister Shavkat Mirziyayev.
The parliament recommended to the Central Election Commission to organize presidential elections in line with the legislation.
First President of Uzbekistan Islam Karimov died in Tashkent on 2 September at the age of 78 after suffering stroke.
